Autumn Term
During the Autumn term, Year 6 had a really exciting visitor! They had the opportunity to dress up as evacuees and spent the day exploring what life was like in the 1940s! In the morning, we were in the hall for geography, maths and history lessons with a “strict” schoolmaster to experience school life during World War II. In the afternoon, we learned about rationing and took our ration books with us to spend the coupons at the market. The children had the opportunity to be the buyers and the sellers, experiencing using shillings and pence and choosing what items were most important for them to buy. It was a learning experience and the children found it insightful.
The children also thoroughly engaged in an exciting Shelter Day, allowing them to develop new skills as part of their Design and Technology curriculum. During the day, the children were able to use hacksaws and glue guns to create frames and joins to construct a model Anderson shelter. The children had previously learnt about the different types of shelters and their uses during air raids. They especially enjoyed personalising their shelters by painting them, and adding vegetables and sandbags.
